


{"id":16618,"date":"2023-11-03T07:10:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T01:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16618"},"modified":"2025-04-04T22:11:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T16:41:25","slug":"lucy-missionn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lucy-missionn\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Lucy Mission?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Lucy Mission<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a first-of-its-kind\u00a0mission of NASA that will\u00a0explore Jupiter\u2019s elusive Trojan asteroids.<\/li>\n<li>It was successfully launched on Oct. 16, 2021, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US.<\/li>\n<li>Over its\u00a012-year mission, Lucy\u00a0will explore a record-breaking\u00a0number of asteroids: it will fly by\u00a0two in the belt of asteroids that circle the Sun between the orbits\u00a0of Mars and Jupiter, and\u00a0then 10 Trojans, which includes five asteroid targets and the satellites of three of those.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Lucy\u00a0also will fly by Earth three times\u00a0to get a push from its gravity, making it the\u00a0first spacecraft to return to the vicinity of\u00a0Earth from the outer solar system.<\/li>\n<li>The spacecraft\u00a0carries two infrared spectrometers and four cameras.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Trojan Asteroids?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Asteroids\u00a0sharing an orbit with a planet, but which are located at the leading (L4) and trailing (L5) Lagrangian points, are known as Trojan asteroids.<\/li>\n<li>These asteroids\u00a0occupy a stable Lagrangian point in a planet\u2019s orbit around the Sun.<\/li>\n<li>They are some of the\u00a0oldest remnants from\u00a0the formation of our\u00a0solar system 4.5 billion years ago.<\/li>\n<li>There are\u00a0currently over 4,800 known Trojan asteroids\u00a0associated with Jupiter.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0orbit the Sun in two loose groups:\u00a0one group leading ahead of Jupiter in its orbit, the\u00a0other trailing behind at the\u00a0same distance from the Sun as Jupiter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a Lagrange point?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Lagrange Points are\u00a0positions in space where the\u00a0gravitational forces of a two body system like the Sun and the Earth\u00a0produce enhanced regions of attraction and repulsion.<\/li>\n<li>The Lagrange Points are\u00a0positions where the gravitational pull of two large masses precisely\u00a0equals the centripetal force required for a small object to move with them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>These\u00a0can be used by spacecraft to reduce fuel consumption needed to remain in position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an Asteroid?<\/h3>\n<p>Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the sun. Although asteroids orbit the sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets. They are leftovers from the formation of our solar system.
