


{"id":16800,"date":"2023-11-08T06:04:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T00:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16800"},"modified":"2025-04-04T23:18:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T17:48:32","slug":"geoglyph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/geoglyph\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Geoglyph?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Geoglyph<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0large design or motif (generally\u00a0longer than 4 metres)\u00a0produced on the ground and\u00a0typically formed by clastic rocks or similarly\u00a0durable elements\u00a0of the\u00a0landscape, such as stones, stone fragments, gravel, or earth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A geoglyph is\u00a0created by arranging or moving objects within a landscape.<\/li>\n<li>There are\u00a0two types of geoglyphs; namely a\u00a0positive and negative geoglyph.<\/li>\n<li>Positive geoglyph: It is formed\u00a0by the arrangement and alignment of materials on the ground\u00a0in a manner\u00a0akin to\u00a0petroforms (which are simply outlines created using boulders).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Negative geoglyph: It is formed\u00a0by removing part of the natural ground surface to create differently coloured or textured ground in a manner\u00a0akin to petroglyphs.<\/li>\n<li>There is\u00a0another variation of a geoglyph\u00a0that involves seeding plants in\u00a0a special design. The design\u00a0usually takes years to see since it depends on the plants growing. This type of geoglyph is\u00a0called an arborglyph.<\/li>\n<li>Another type of geoglyph often referred to as\u00a0\u2018chalk giants\u2019 are\u00a0those carved into hillsides exposing the bedrock beneath.<\/li>\n<li>Geoglyphs in History:\n<ul>\n<li>From ancient times, the most widely known geoglyphs are the\u00a0Nazca Lines of Peru, which have been a mystery to this day.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Other geoglyphs from the past include the\u00a0Megaliths in the Urals, the\u00a0Uffington White Horse, the Long Man of Wilmington, and many others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Features of the Geoglyph unearthed from Telangana<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Etched on a low-lying granitoid hillock, the geoglyph spans\u00a07.5 metres in diameter and has a\u00a0perfect circular shape.<\/li>\n<li>Surrounding the circle is a\u00a030-centimetre-wide rim, and\u00a0within the circle are two triangles.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0dated to the Iron Age, specifically\u00a0around 1000 BCE.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is suggested that this circle\u00a0might have served as a model for megalithic communities in planning their circular burial sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key facts about Nazca Lines<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The lines are a\u00a0group of massive geoglyphs in southern\u00a0Peru\u2019s Nazca Desert.<\/li>\n<li>Experts estimate that they were designed anywhere in the\u00a0period from 500 BCE to 500 CE.<\/li>\n<li>Some\u00a0of the\u00a0lines are straight,\u00a0while others depict designs of animals and plants.<\/li>\n<li>All the lines have a\u00a0combined length of\u00a0more than 808 miles, while they cover an area of around 19 square miles.<\/li>\n<li>An individual design has a width of between 0.2 and 0.7 miles.<\/li>\n<li>All the\u00a0designs were made by removing the top layer of soil. The depth of a line is anywhere between four and six inches.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the shapes are visible from a height of as much\u00a0as 1,500 feet.<\/li>\n<li>The preservation of the lines over the years\u00a0can be attributed to the dry and windless climate of the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are clastic rocks?<\/h3>\n<p>Clastic rocks are the broken bits and pieces of older rocks that lithified (turn to stone) and became new rocks. The broken bits and pieces of older rocks are clasts.
