{"id":16867,"date":"2023-11-10T03:16:31","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T21:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16867"},"modified":"2025-04-05T00:34:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:04:52","slug":"kws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kws\/","title":{"rendered":"Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Location: The KWS, famously known as the\u00a0Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary, is located in the\u00a0Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of the state of\u00a0Uttarakhand.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0named after the famous\u00a0Hindu temple of Kedarnath, which\u00a0lies outside the northern border of the sanctuary.<\/li>\n<li>Its alternate name comes from its\u00a0primary purpose of\u00a0protecting the endangered\u00a0Himalayan musk deer.<\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0largest protected area\u00a0in the\u00a0western Himalayas.<\/li>\n<li>The sanctuary was established in 1972, covering a total area of 975.20 km2.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0lies in\u00a0the upper catchment of the\u00a0Alaknanda and Mandakini Rivers.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0altitude ranges from\u00a01,160 to 7,068 m.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0bordered by Kedarnath (6940 m),\u00a0Mandani (6193 m), and\u00a0Chaukhamba (7068 m)\u00a0peaks in the north.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The area falls under the\u00a0West Himalayan Zone in the Palearctic realm.<\/li>\n<li>Vegetation:\n<ul>\n<li>It is covered with\u00a0temperate forests.<\/li>\n<li>The higher and\u00a0upper regions\u00a0possess the\u00a0sub-alpine and alpine coniferous forests.<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0high altitude,\u00a0lush green meadows envelope the entire region.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Flora:\u00a0Oak, rhododendrons, Chir Pine and Alpine meadows along with several Himalayan flowering plants.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Fauna: Some of the mammals are Musk\u00a0deer, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Black bear, Snow Leopard, etc, and some birds like Monal, Koklass, and Himalayan Griffon, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are temperate forests?<\/h3>\n<p>Temperate forests are a type of forest ecosystem found in regions with moderate temperatures and ample rainfall.
