{"id":16879,"date":"2023-11-10T01:09:57","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T19:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16879"},"modified":"2025-04-05T00:39:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:09:23","slug":"cbi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cbi\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0premier investigative agency in India, with a\u00a0dual responsibility to\u00a0investigate grievous cases\u00a0and\u00a0provide leadership and direction\u00a0in fighting corruption to the police force\u00a0across the country.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0establishment of the CBI was recommended by the\u00a0Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption\u00a0(1962\u20131964).<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0not a statutory\u00a0body, as it\u00a0was set up by a resolution (1963) of the Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0derives its powers from the\u00a0Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.<\/li>\n<li>It is also the nodal police agency in India\u00a0that coordinates investigations on behalf of Interpol member countries.<\/li>\n<li>Motto: Industry, Impartiality, and Integrity<\/li>\n<li>Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions<\/li>\n<li>Though,\u00a0for issues under the Prevention of Corruption\u00a0Act, its\u00a0superintendence lies\u00a0with the\u00a0Central Vigilance Commission.<\/li>\n<li>Following are the\u00a0types of cases that CBI deals with:\n<ul>\n<li>Anti-Corruption Crimes: CBI manages the investigation of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act\u00a0against public officials and central government employees,\u00a0Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs),\u00a0Corporations, or bodies owned or\u00a0controlled by the central government of India.<\/li>\n<li>Economic Crimes:\u00a0It probes the\u00a0cases of huge financial scams\u00a0and serious economic frauds, comprising crimes relating to fake Indian currency notes, bank fraud and cybercrime, import-export and\u00a0foreign exchange violations, cultural property, mega\u00a0smuggling racket of\u00a0narcotics,\u00a0antiques,\u00a0and smuggling of other contraband items.<\/li>\n<li>Suo Moto Cases:<\/li>\n<li>CBI accelerates the investigation of offences\u00a0only in the Union Territories by taking them up on a priority basis.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0central government can ask the\u00a0CBI to probe a crime in a state, but\u00a0only with due permission from the respective State Government.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Supreme Court and\u00a0High Court can\u00a0also direct the CBI to investigate\u00a0crimes anywhere in the country\u00a0without the state\u2019s approval.<\/li>\n<li>Special Crimes:<\/li>\n<li>CBI manages the\u00a0investigation of serious and pre-planned crimes\u00a0under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other laws on the requests of the state governments\u00a0or the direction of the Supreme Court\u00a0and High Courts.<\/li>\n<li>For instance, cases like bomb blasts, terrorism, abduction for ransom, and crimes committed by the mafia or the underworld at a particular place in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)?<\/h3>\n<p>CVC is an apex vigilance institution that exercises superintendence over the vigilance administration of the organizations where the executive powers of the Government of India extends. iT was set up through a resolution of the Government of India on the recommendations of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption formed under the Chairmanship of Shri K. Santhanam in 1964. The CVC is not controlled by any Ministry\/Department. It is responsible to the Parliament. It has all the powers of a Civil Court while conducting any inquiry.
