{"id":16887,"date":"2023-11-10T01:38:08","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T20:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16887"},"modified":"2025-04-05T00:42:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:12:26","slug":"new-crustacean-parasites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/new-crustacean-parasites\/","title":{"rendered":"New crustacean parasites"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About New crustacean parasites<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Researchers have named the new family\u00a0Uranoscopicolaidae.<\/li>\n<li>This is also the\u00a0first discovery and description of a new crustacean\u00a0family from India.<\/li>\n<li>This parasitic copepod was found to depend upon the\u00a0Dollfus\u2019 Stargazer (Uranoscopus guttatus), a\u00a0fish dwelling in depths ranging from 300-550 m off the southwest Indian coast.<\/li>\n<li>The discovery of the new family has also led to the creation of a new genus and species,\u00a0Hirodai ohstukai under it.<\/li>\n<li>These parasitic copepods are known to\u00a0infest a wide range of hosts, from sponges to marine mammals.<\/li>\n<li>New\u00a0isopod species which has been named\u00a0Glyptothoa sagara; \u2018Glypto\u2019 as the fish parasite was found in the deep sea fish Glyptophidium macropus, and \u2018sagara\u2019 for ocean.<\/li>\n<li>Another new isopod crustacean parasite species named\u00a0Elthusa aquabio was collected from an unknown fish.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The fourth new species is a 11-12 mm \u201cflesh-penetrating parasitic copepod,\u201d which has been named as\u00a0Cardiodectes vampire.<\/li>\n<li>It was found to infest the deep-sea fish\u00a0Chlorophthalmus corniger.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are\u00a0crustaceans?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These are members of the\u00a0subphylum Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda),<\/li>\n<li>They are found in a wide range of habitats &#8211; most are free-living\u00a0freshwater or marine animals, but some are terrestrial.<\/li>\n<li>They are invertebrates\u00a0with a hard exoskeleton (carapace), a\u00a0segmented body that is bilaterally symmetrical, more than four pairs of jointed appendages (&#8220;legs&#8221;) and\u00a0an open circulatory system.<\/li>\n<li>Examples: Crabs, lobsters, shrimps, and wood lice etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Copepods?<\/h3>\n<p>These are a group of small crustaceans that are important members of aquatic ecosystems. They belong to the subclass Copepoda within the class Maxillopoda. Copepods are found in various aquatic environments, including freshwater and marine systems.
