{"id":16911,"date":"2023-11-11T11:45:47","date_gmt":"2023-11-11T06:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16911"},"modified":"2025-04-05T00:53:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:23:06","slug":"vampire-viruses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vampire-viruses\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Vampire Viruses?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Vampire Viruses<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are\u00a0pathogens that\u00a0latch onto other viruses in order\u00a0to replicate themselves.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0emerge when a bacteriophage attaches\u00a0to\u00a0a soil-based\u00a0virus, utilising its &#8220;life&#8221; for independent\u00a0survival.<\/li>\n<li>This viral relationship between two pathogens\u00a0is called a satellite and a helper.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0satellite is the infectious strand\u00a0that\u00a0relies on the helper\u00a0for support through its life cycle.<\/li>\n<li>Satellites depend on\u00a0both their\u00a0host organism and\u00a0helper virus to complete its life cycle.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0satellite virus\u00a0depends\u00a0on the\u00a0helper virus\u00a0to build the protective shell that covers its genetic material,\u00a0called a capsid\u00a0or to help it replicate its DNA.<\/li>\n<li>Most satellite viruses\u00a0contain a gene\u00a0that\u00a0allows them to integrate into the host cell\u2019s\u00a0genetic material after they enter the cell.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This\u00a0enables the satellite to reproduce whenever a helper enters\u00a0the cell from then on.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0host cell also copies the satellite\u2019s DNA\u00a0and its own when it divides.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a Bacteriophage?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bacteriophages (BPs) are\u00a0viruses that can infect and kill bacteria\u00a0without any negative\u00a0effect on\u00a0human or\u00a0animal cells.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>For this reason, it is supposed that\u00a0they can be used, alone or in combination with antibiotics,\u00a0to treat bacterial infections.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0comprised of a protein capsule around an RNA or DNA genome.<\/li>\n<li>The bacteriophage structure may\u00a0include various features for infecting the host cell. Many bacteriophages\u00a0have a central shaft and leglike appendages.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0legs attach to the bacteria, and genetic material is injected\u00a0through the shaft into the host cell cytoplasm,\u00a0where it replicates and reassembles into progeny.<\/li>\n<li>Thousands of varieties of phages exist,\u00a0each of which may infect only one type or a few types of bacteria or archaea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Virus?<\/h3>\n<p>A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself. Often, a virus ends up killing the host cell in the process, causing damage to the host organism.
