{"id":16951,"date":"2024-11-11T12:04:07","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T06:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16951"},"modified":"2025-04-05T01:08:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T19:38:27","slug":"arrow-3-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arrow-3-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Arrow-3 Missile Defence System?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Arrow-3 Missile Defence System:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>exo-atmospheric anti-ballistic missile defence system<\/strong> for long-range threat engagement.<\/li>\n<li>The Arrow 3 interceptor is <strong>part of<\/strong> a <strong>series of the Arrow Weapon System <\/strong>(AWS), the <strong>world\u2019s first national,<\/strong> operational, and <strong>stand-alone Anti Tactical Ballistic Missiles (ATBM) defense system.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was jointly <strong>developed by Israel <\/strong>Aerospace Industries <strong>and the<\/strong> Missile Defence Agency in the <strong>US<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Initially deployed in 2017, Arrow-3 is the <strong>top layer of Israel&#8217;s<\/strong> sophisticated <strong>air-defense network, <\/strong>which also includes the Arrow 2, David\u2019s Sling, and the Iron Dome active defence systems.<\/li>\n<li>It is designed to <strong>take out <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-daily-current-affairs\/prelims-pointers\/ballistic-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ballistic missiles<\/strong><\/a><strong> while they are still outside of the atmosphere.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It uses <strong>two-stage solid-fueled interceptors<\/strong> to engage short- and medium-range ballistic missiles and consists of a launcher, radar, and battle management system.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>hypersonic<\/strong>, which travels five times the speed of sound.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It provides a <strong>range of 2,400 km<\/strong> and can intercept threats at an altitude of 100 km.<\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>early warning and fire control radar<\/strong>. It provides extended-range acquisition as well as <strong>multi-target acquisition and tracking capabilities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How does it work?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It uses <strong>hit-to-kill technology<\/strong> to destroy incoming missiles.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The missile is launched vertically, and then the direction is changed towards the estimated interception point.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The high-<strong>resolution electro-optical sensor acquires the target<\/strong> for the kill vehicle to hit the target and destroy the warhead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Ballistic Missiles?<\/h3>\n<p>Ballistic missiles are powered initially by a rocket or series of rockets in stages, but then follow an unpowered trajectory that arches upwards before descending to reach its intended target.
