With a project cost of \u20b976,220 crore and completion targeted by 2034, the port is expected to become one of the world\u2019s top ten ports while significantly enhancing India\u2019s cargo handling, trade connectivity, logistics efficiency and maritime competitiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vadhavan Port<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vadhavan Port is strategically located near Dahanu in Maharashtra and is designed to transform India\u2019s maritime landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Location: The port is being developed at Vadhavan in Palghar district, around 140 km north of Mumbai.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Status: It is proposed as India\u2019s 13th major port and will strengthen the country&#8217;s western maritime corridor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantage: Vadhavan possesses a natural depth of nearly 20 meters, allowing accommodation of mega container vessels and ultra large cargo ships that cannot berth at many existing Indian ports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing Agency: The project is being executed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a Special Purpose Vehicle formed by <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/jawaharlal-nehru-port\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jawaharlal Nehru Port<\/strong><\/a> Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) with equity participation of 74% and 26% respectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenfield Port Development: Built from scratch on previously undeveloped coastal land, the project is planned as an all weather greenfield deep draft major port capable of handling cargo operations throughout the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Maritime Hub Vision: The port is intended to emerge as India&#8217;s largest container port and one of its biggest deep water ports, supporting international shipping routes connecting Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Vadhavan Port Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vadhavan Port Project represents one of the largest port infrastructure investments undertaken in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Cost: The total investment, including land acquisition, is estimated at \u20b976,220 crore.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion Timeline: The project is scheduled for completion by 2034 and will be developed through public private partnership arrangements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development Phases: Construction is planned in two phases with a total container handling capacity of about 23.2 million TEUs, positioning the facility among the largest container ports globally.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cargo Handling Capacity: Vadhavan Port will create an annual handling capacity of 298 million metric tonnes (MMT), making Infrastructure: The Cabinet has approved road and rail connectivity linking the port to national highways, the existing railway network and the <a aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boost to National Trade: The port can support India&#8217;s projected sea based EXIM trade of approximately $1.6-2 trillion by 2030 while reducing dependence on foreign ports for transshipment activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategic Corridor Integration: Its location strengthens India&#8217;s participation in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/imec-economic-corridor\/\" target=\"_blank\">India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor<\/a><\/strong> (IMEEC) and the International <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-north-south-transport-corridor-instc\/\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superior Hinterland Connectivity: Situated only 12 km from the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor and 22 km from the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, the port will serve industrial target=\"_blank\"><strong>PM Gati Shakti programme<\/strong><\/a>, the project has the potential to create nearly 12 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities and stimulate regional economic 400;\">Industrial and Logistics Growth: The project is expected to attract logistics companies, warehouses, suppliers, manufacturing units and industrial clusters, generating economies of agglomeration in western India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skill Development Initiatives: VPPL has signed agreements with YCMOU, DG Shipping, Sahyadri Farms and NGOs to provide maritime training, entrepreneurship support, heavy vehicle driving skills and livelihood opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional Development Programmes: Tribal welfare, livelihood enhancement, coastal community development, <a 16th largest maritime nation, with maritime transport carrying about 95% of trade by volume and 70% by value.
