{"id":16959,"date":"2026-01-20T12:20:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T06:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=16959"},"modified":"2026-01-20T16:38:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T11:08:17","slug":"vadhavan-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vadhavan-port\/","title":{"rendered":"Vadhavan Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Vadhavan Port Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 20,000 residents of Palghar district recently took out a protest march on Monday against the proposed Vadhavan port and a slew of other infrastructure projects, citing environmental damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Vadhavan Port<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>proposed new port<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 140 km <\/span><b>north of Mumba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i on the coast of <\/span><b>Maharashtra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Palghar District.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being developed as an <\/span><b>all-weather greenfield deep-draft major port.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vadhvan offers a<\/span><b> natural depth of 20 meters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it <\/span><b>ideal for large container and bulk vessels.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will be <\/span><b>constructed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a special purpose vehicle<\/span><b> (SPV) formed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a shareholding of 74% and 26%, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The total project cost, including the land acquisition component, is Rs.76,220 Crore.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scheduled <\/span><b>to be finished by 2034, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is projected to be among the top 10 ports in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The port will comprise <\/span><b>nine container terminals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each 1000 meters long; four multipurpose berths; including the coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project involves the <\/span><b>reclamation of 1,448 hectares of area in the sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the construction of 10.14 km of offshore breakwater and container\/cargo storage areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Project will create a cumulative capacity of 298 million metric tons (MMT) per annum, including around 23.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalents) of container handling capacity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>strategic location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Vadhavan Port provides it with a unique edge.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Situated just <\/span><b>12 km from the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>22 km from the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the port will connect seamlessly to industrial centers across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and beyond.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The capacities created will also<\/span><b> aid EXIM trade flow through IMEEC (India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor) and INSTC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (International North South Transportation Corridor).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/mumbai\/march-palghar-vadhavan-port-allied-projects-10483647\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vadhavan Port is a proposed new port 140 km north of Mumbai on the coast of Maharashtra in the Palghar District.
