{"id":17052,"date":"2023-11-17T03:23:49","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T21:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17052"},"modified":"2025-04-05T01:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T20:19:10","slug":"wasp-107b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wasp-107b\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Wasp-107b?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Wasp-107b<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0newly discovered exoplanet situated\u00a0200 light-years away\u00a0in the\u00a0Virgo constellation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The mass of WASP-107b\u00a0is 30.5 Earths, and it\u00a0takes only six days to orbit its home star, which is slightly cooler and less massive than our sun.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0shares Jupiter&#8217;s size but possesses the mass of Neptune, making it less dense than other gas giants.<\/li>\n<li>The planet&#8217;s low density allowed astronomers to look 50 times deeper into the atmosphere of the planet compared to observations achieved for more dense planets, like Jupiter.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0exoplanet is scorching hot (with an outer atmosphere that&#8217;s more than 900 degrees Fahrenheit).<\/li>\n<li>Sand Rain:\n<ul>\n<li>Wasp-107b\u00a0exhibits a water cycle akin to Earth&#8217;s, but with one peculiar difference:\u00a0instead of water droplets, the planet experiences sand rain.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0falling grains are, in fact,\u00a0silicate vapours rising from lower atmospheric levels.<\/li>\n<li>Similar to Earth&#8217;s water cycle,\u00a0these sand clouds precipitate back to lower planetary atmospheric levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In addition to the silicate clouds, scientists have\u00a0identified water vapor and sulfur dioxide\u00a0in the atmosphere of WASP-107b.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are gas giants?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Gas giants are\u00a0large planets composed mostly of gases,\u00a0such as hydrogen and helium, with a\u00a0relatively small rocky core.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0gas giants of our\u00a0solar system- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune- together make up a group\u00a0known as the Jovian planets (Jupiter-like).<\/li>\n<li>The solar system&#8217;s four gas giants\u00a0reside farthest from the Sun,\u00a0past\u00a0the orbits of Mars and the\u00a0asteroid belt. So they are\u00a0also called outer planets.<\/li>\n<li>All of the outer planets\u00a0have numerous moons. They all also\u00a0have planetary rings,\u00a0composed of dust and other small particles that encircle the planet in a thin plane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the James Webb Telescope?<\/h3>\n<p>This telescope was built in collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency and was launched in December 2021. It is presently at a point in space known as the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, approximately 1.5 million km beyond Earth\u2019s orbit.
