{"id":17072,"date":"2023-11-17T11:59:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T06:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17072"},"modified":"2025-04-05T01:58:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T20:28:02","slug":"leonid-meteor-shower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/leonid-meteor-shower\/","title":{"rendered":"Leonid meteor shower"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Leonid meteor shower<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is brought about by the dust and debris abandoned by the\u00a0comet Tempel-Tuttle.<\/li>\n<li>It is commonly\u00a0peaking in mid-November.<\/li>\n<li>The shower is called after the Leo constellation, from which the meteors appear to radiate.<\/li>\n<li>This Tempel-Tuttle comet circles the sun at\u00a0regular intervals of 33 years.<\/li>\n<li>When the comet passes near the sun, it warms up and delivers a ton of material, shaping a dense cloud of dust and gas around it.<\/li>\n<li>This cloud follows the comet&#8217;s circle and fans out over the long run.<\/li>\n<li>The earth every year crosses the\u00a0orbit of Tempel-Tuttle in mid-November and in some cases experiences the comet&#8217;s dust cloud.<\/li>\n<li>When this occurs, the dust particles enter the earth\u2019s atmosphere at high speed (around 70 km\/s) and catch fire, creating bright streaks of light in the sky.<\/li>\n<li>These are what we see as the &#8216;meteors&#8217;, the Leonid meteor shower.<\/li>\n<li>The Leonids are noted for sometimes causing meteor storms described by a higher influx of meteors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Comets?<\/h3>\n<p>These are celestial objects composed mainly of ice, dust, gas, and rocky particles that orbit the Sun. They are often referred to as &#8220;dirty snowballs&#8221; or &#8220;icy mudballs&#8221; due to their composition.
