


{"id":17088,"date":"2023-11-14T08:56:40","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T03:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17088"},"modified":"2025-04-05T02:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T20:35:10","slug":"portuguese-coins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/portuguese-coins\/","title":{"rendered":"Portuguese coins"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Portuguese coins<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Portuguese people issued coins in\u00a0gold, copper and silver from Goa.<\/li>\n<li>The gold coins were termed as &#8216;Cruzado&#8217;\u00a0or &#8216;Manoel&#8217; and were issued in the same size, value and weight as the\u00a0&#8216;Pagodas&#8217; or &#8216;Hons&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Another type of gold coin named &#8216;Meio-manoel&#8217;, and &#8216;Meia-espera&#8217; and &#8216;Espera&#8217; in silver were also issued.<\/li>\n<li>The gold &#8216;Manoel&#8217; and the silver &#8216;Espera&#8217; had the\u00a0Cross of the Order of Christ on the obverse and the armillary sphere, the device of the King D. Manoel on the reverse side of the coin were found.<\/li>\n<li>The half pieces of these coins bore the\u00a0word &#8216;MEA&#8217; surmounted by a crown on one side of the coin and the armillary sphere on the flip side of the coin.<\/li>\n<li>The Governor of Goa suspended the issue of these coins in 1519.<\/li>\n<li>After this in 1549, gold and silver coins were reintroduced.<\/li>\n<li>During this period, the Portuguese had adopted the\u00a0Apostle St. Thomas as their patron saint for India.<\/li>\n<li>Since then it had been decided to etch the\u00a0effigy of St. Thomas on their Indian coins and to give the coins the name of St. Thome.<\/li>\n<li>The gold and the silver coins had a seated or standing figure of St. Thomas with the letters S and T on one side of the coin and the crowned arm of Portugal with the initials of the reigning monarch on the other side of the coin.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes\u00a0small inscriptions were also found in the coins.<\/li>\n<li>The gold coins of Portuguese were of the\u00a0value of 20, 10, 5 and 2 &#8216;Xerafirms&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Two mints were opened at Bassein and Daman in 1611 for issuing\u00a0copper &#8216;Buzaruccos&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Later on &#8216;tutenag&#8217; coins were issued from these mints.<\/li>\n<li>The copper &#8216;Buzaruccos&#8217; had the coat-of-arms on one side of the coin and a sheaf of arrows on the flip side of the coin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Inscriptions?<\/h3>\n<p>These are writing or engravings on a surface, often on stone, metal, wood, or other durable materials.
