


{"id":17100,"date":"2024-11-18T12:17:23","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T06:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17100"},"modified":"2025-04-05T02:09:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T20:39:42","slug":"epilepsy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/epilepsy\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Epilepsy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Epilepsy:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Epilepsy \u2014 also known as a <strong>seizure disorder<\/strong> \u2014 is a <strong>chronic brain disorder<\/strong> where <strong>nerve cells don\u2019t signal properly<\/strong>, that <strong>causes recurring seizures<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>During a seizure,many neurons send signals at the same time<\/strong>, much faster than normal.<\/li>\n<li>This <strong>surge of excessive electrical activity<\/strong> may <strong>cause involuntary movements<\/strong>, sensations, <strong>emotions<\/strong>, and\/or <strong>behaviors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The disturbance of normal nerve cell activity may cause a <strong>loss of awareness.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Some people recover immediately<\/strong> after a seizure, while <strong>others<\/strong> may <strong>take minutes to hours<\/strong> to feel like themselves again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Causes<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Epilepsy has many possible causes, but about <strong>half of people<\/strong> living with epilepsy <strong>do not know the cause<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>some cases<\/strong>, epilepsy is clearly <strong>linked to genetic factors<\/strong>, <strong>developmental brain abnormalities, infection<\/strong>, <strong>traumatic brain injury<\/strong> (TBI), stroke, <strong>brain tumors<\/strong>, or other identifiable problems.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Seizure <strong>symptoms can vary widely<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Some people<\/strong> may <strong>lose awareness <\/strong>during a seizure while others don&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<li>Some people <strong>stare blankly for a few seconds<\/strong> during a seizure.<\/li>\n<li>Others may repeatedly <strong>twitch their arms or legs<\/strong>, movements known as <strong>convulsions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Having a single seizure doesn&#8217;t mean you have epilepsy. <strong>Epilepsy is diagnosed if<\/strong> you&#8217;ve had<strong> at least two unprovoked seizures<\/strong> at least <strong>24 hours apart<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone can develop epilepsy. It affects both men and women of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and ages.<\/li>\n<li>Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, making it one of the most <strong>common neurological diseases globally.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Treatment with <strong>medicines<\/strong> or sometimes <strong>surgery<\/strong> can control seizures for most people with epilepsy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Some people require lifelong treatment<\/strong>.
