The navigational span will be 63 meters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0replace the iconic Pamban Bridge,\u00a0India&#8217;s first sea bridge, which opened in 1914.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0new bridge is being built parallel to the old Pamban Bridge\u00a0by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>The most unique feature of the new Pamban Bridge is its\u00a0vertical lift facility. It will\u00a0help boats pass under the bridge smoothly.<\/li>\n<li>While the\u00a0old bridge has the &#8216;Scherzer&#8217; rolling lift technology, in which the\u00a0bridge opens up horizontally to let ships pass through, the\u00a0new bridge will lift vertically upwards, remaining parallel to the deck. It will be\u00a0done using sensors at each end.<\/li>\n<li>The vertical lift span\u00a0will\u00a0have electromechanical control interlocked with the train control system.<\/li>\n<li>To\u00a0allow for shipping traffic to pass under the vertical lift section of the bridge,\u00a0rail traffic would be stopped. The navigational span would move up vertically to create enough height for boats to pass.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It will\u00a0allow a full horizontal length of 72.5 metres for navigation.<\/li>\n<li>While the new Pamban Bridge is\u00a03 meters higher than the old bridge, it also has a navigational air clearance of 22 metres above mean sea level.<\/li>\n<li>It has been\u00a0designed for double railway line and future electrification as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL)?<\/h3>\n<p>RVNL was incorporated as an 100% owned PSU of Ministry of Railways (MoR) on 24-1-2003 with the twin objectives of raising extra-budgetary resources and implementation of projects relating to creation and augmentation of capacity of rail infrastructure on fast track basis.
