


{"id":17224,"date":"2025-06-16T14:23:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T08:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17224"},"modified":"2025-06-16T16:26:14","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T10:56:14","slug":"narmada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/narmada\/","title":{"rendered":"Narmada River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Narmada River Latest News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the launch of the Madhya Pradesh government\u2019s Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, the Ghoda Pachhad River-a tributary of the Narmada-has been revived in Khandwa district. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Narmada River<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>largest west-flowing river<\/b> <b>in peninsular India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the major rivers of peninsular India, only the Narmada, the Tapti, and the Mahirun from east to west.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has long been an <\/span><b>important route between<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Arabian Sea and the Ganges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ganga) River valley.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Narmada was <\/span><b>called Namade by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the 2nd-century-ce<\/span><b> Greek geographer Ptolemy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>origin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the river is a tiny reservoir named <\/span><b>Narmada Kund,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is situated on the <\/span><b>Amarkantak Hill in East Madhya Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at an elevation of 1,057 m on the <\/span><b>border with Chhattisgarh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river flows through <\/span><b>Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat between Vindhya and Satpura hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges before <\/span><b>falling into the Gulf of Cambay <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>Arabian Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 10 km north of Bharuch, <\/span><b>Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Length<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The total length of the river is <\/span><b>1312 kilometres <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(815 miles). It is the <\/span><b>fifth longest river of India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Narmada basin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extends over an area of<\/span><b> 98,796 sq. km.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>includes a portion of Chhattisgarh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narmada flows through the <\/span><b>Hoshangabad plains,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Dhar upland,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Mahishmati plains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>gorges at Mandhata and Murakta.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basin is <\/span><b>bounded <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the north <\/span><b>by the Vindhyas,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the east by the <\/span><b>Maikala range, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the south by the <\/span><b>Satpuras<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and on the west by the <\/span><b>Arabian Sea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Tropic of Cancer crosses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Narmada basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the upper plains area, and a major part of the basin lies just below this line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the rivers that <\/span><b>flow in a rift valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and acts as a <\/span><b>divider between north India and south India.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These rift valleys are the result of the faulting that took place when the northern flank of the Peninsula suffered subsidence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river has numerous waterfalls, notably the <\/span><b>Dhuandhar Falls,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> southwest of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tributaries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main tributaries of Narmada River are, namely, <\/span><b>Hallon River, Banjar River, Barna River, and Tawa River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Tawa River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>longest tributary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Narmada River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also numerous pilgrimage spots on the banks of the river, the most important among them are<\/span><b> Mahewswar and Omkareshwar temples.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several dams along the course of the river, including major hydroelectric projects, such as the <\/span><b>Sardar Sarovar Dam, the Indira Sagar Dam, the Omkareshwar Dam, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Bargi Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>Maheshwar Dam.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/news\/india\/2025\/06\/13\/madhya-pradesh-jal-ganga-sanvardhan-abhiyan-shows-promising-results.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TWEEK<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Narmada River is the largest west-flowing river in peninsular India, known for its scenic beauty and cultural significance.
