{"id":17268,"date":"2023-11-22T04:41:04","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T23:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17268"},"modified":"2025-04-05T03:13:24","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T21:43:24","slug":"cites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cites\/","title":{"rendered":"Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0international agreement between governments that aims\u00a0to ensure that\u00a0international trade in wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.<\/li>\n<li>CITES was\u00a0adopted in 1973 and entered into force in 1975.<\/li>\n<li>There are\u00a0184 member parties, and\u00a0trade is regulated in more than 38,000 species.<\/li>\n<li>Although CITES is\u00a0legally binding on the Parties \u2013 in other words, they have to implement the Convention\u2013it does not take the place of national laws.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0CITES Secretariat is administered by the United Nations Environment Programme\u00a0(UNEP)\u00a0and\u00a0is\u00a0located in Geneva, Switzerland.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Representatives of CITES nations meet every two to three years at a Conference of the Parties (or COP)\u00a0to review progress and adjust the lists\u00a0of protected species, which are\u00a0grouped into three categories with different levels of protection:<\/li>\n<li>Appendix I:\n<ul>\n<li>It includes\u00a0species threatened with extinction and provides the\u00a0greatest level of protection, including a\u00a0prohibition on commercial trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Appendix II:\n<ul>\n<li>It includes\u00a0species that are not currently threatened\u00a0with extinction but\u00a0may become so without trade controls.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Regulated trade is allowed\u00a0if the exporting country issues a permit based on findings that the specimens were legally acquired and the trade will not be detrimental to the survival of the species or its role in the ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Appendix III:\n<ul>\n<li>It includes\u00a0species for which a country has asked other CITES parties to help control international trade.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Trade in Appendix III species is\u00a0regulated using CITES export permits (issued by the country that listed the species in Appendix III)\u00a0and certificates of origin (issued by all other countries).<\/li>\n<li>Countries may list species for which they have domestic regulations\u00a0in Appendix III at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CITES also\u00a0brings together law enforcement officers from wildlife authorities,\u00a0national parks, customs, and police agencies to collaborate on efforts to combat wildlife crime targeted at animals such as elephants and rhinos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)?<\/h3>\n<p>UNEP is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system.
