Invest to prevent violence against women and girls&#8221;, emphasises the need to fund prevention strategies proactively to stop gender-based violence.<\/li>\n<li>History:\n<ul>\n<li>Since 1981,\u00a0women\u2019s rights activists have marked 25 November\u00a0as a\u00a0day against gender-based violence, paying\u00a0homage to the Mirabal sisters\u2014three\u00a0Dominican political activists brutally\u00a0murdered in 1960 by\u00a0order of the\u00a0country\u2019s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0UN General Assembly,\u00a0on 20 December\u00a01993, adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, laying the groundwork for global efforts to eradicate such violence.<\/li>\n<li>On 7 February\u00a02000, the General Assembly, through a resolution, officially designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This resolution\u00a0urged governments, international organizations and NGOs to unite in\u00a0organizing activities annually on this date,\u00a0fostering public awareness and collective action\u00a0to address\u00a0and eliminate\u00a0violence against women and girls worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the UN General Assembly?<\/h3>\n<p>The General Assembly is one of the six main organs of the United Nations, the only one in which all Member States have equal representation: one nation, one vote.
