{"id":17380,"date":"2024-08-29T08:49:46","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T03:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17380"},"modified":"2025-04-05T03:57:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T22:27:07","slug":"deepfakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/deepfakes\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Deepfakes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Deepfakes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Deepfakes are <strong>synthetic media<\/strong>, including images, videos, and audio, <strong>generated by artificial intelligence (AI) <\/strong>technology that <strong>portray something that does not exist in reality<\/strong> or <strong>events that have never occurred<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The term deepfake <strong>combines deep,<\/strong> taken <strong>from AI deep-learning technology<\/strong> (a type of machine learning that involves multiple levels of processing), <strong>and fake,<\/strong> addressing that the <strong>content is not real.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>can create people who do not exist,<\/strong> and it can <strong>fake real people saying and doing things they did not<\/strong> say or do.<\/li>\n<li>Background: The origin of the word \u201cdeepfake\u201d can be traced back to 2017, when a Reddit user with the username \u201cdeepfakes\u201d, posted explicit videos of celebrities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Working:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are created by <strong>machine learning models<\/strong>, which <strong>use neural networks<\/strong> to <strong>manipulate images and videos<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>To make a deepfake video of someone, <strong>a creator would first train<\/strong> a <strong>neural network on many hours of real video<\/strong> footage of the person <strong>to give it a realistic \u201cunderstanding&#8221;<\/strong> of what he or she looks like from many angles and under different lighting.<\/li>\n<li>Then <strong>they&#8217;d combine the trained network with computer-graphics<\/strong> techniques <strong>to superimpose a copy of the person<\/strong> onto a different actor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Deepfake technology is now being <strong>used for nefarious purposes<\/strong> like <strong>scams and hoaxes<\/strong>, <strong>celebrity pornography, election manipulation<\/strong>, <strong>social engineering<\/strong>, automated disinformation attacks, identity theft, and financial fraud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Deep fakes differ from other forms of false information by being <strong>very difficult to identify as false.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is machine learning?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/quest-upsc-notes\/machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Machine Learning<\/a>, often abbreviated as ML, is a subset of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/quest-upsc-notes\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> that focuses on the development of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience and by the use of data.
