That is\u00a0millions of times more than particles produced in the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful accelerator ever built, and equivalent to the energy of a golf ball travelling at 95mph.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It comes only\u00a0second to the Oh-My-God particle, another ultra-high-energy cosmic ray that came in at 320 EeV,\u00a0detected in 1991.<\/li>\n<li>Amaterasu appears to have\u00a0emerged from the Local Void,\u00a0an empty area of space bordering the Milky Way galaxy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Cosmic Rays?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are\u00a0echoes of violent celestial events that have\u00a0stripped matter of its\u00a0subatomic structures and hurled it through the universe at nearly the\u00a0speed of light.<\/li>\n<li>Essentially, cosmic rays are\u00a0charged particles with a wide\u00a0range of energies consisting of positive protons, negative electrons, or entire atomic nuclei that\u00a0travel through space and\u00a0rain down onto Earth nearly constantly.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0hit\u00a0Earth\u2019s upper atmosphere\u00a0and blast apart the nucleus of oxygen and nitrogen gas,\u00a0generating many secondary particles.<\/li>\n<li>These\u00a0travel a short distance in the atmosphere\u00a0and repeat the process,\u00a0building a shower of\u00a0billions of secondary particles that scatter\u00a0to the surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the speed of light?<\/h3>\n<p>Light moves at an incredible 186,000 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second), equivalent to almost 700 million mph (more than 1 billion km\/h).
