text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>extension of the Indian Ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located <\/span><b>between the Arabian Peninsula and<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>African continent.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gulf <\/span><b>connects <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Red Sea to the Arabian Sea via<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Strait of Bab el Mandeb.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gulf is <\/span><b>named after \u201cAden,\u201d a port city on Yemen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s coast.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the largest natural harbors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world, with an area of about 70 sq. km of sheltered water.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is approximately 900 km long and 500 km wide and covers roughly 410,000 sq.km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gulf is <\/span><b>connected to the Somali Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the south <\/span><b>by the Guardafui Channel.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In the west,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it<\/span><b> narrows into the Gulf of Tadjoura,near Djibouti.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>demarcated from the Arabian Sea by the Horn of Africa a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd the <\/span><b>Socotra Islands.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>geologically young body of water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a unique rich biodiversity that comprises many varieties of coral, fish, seabirds, and invertebrates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dominant relief feature of the gulf\u2019s terrain is the <\/span><b>Sheba Ridge,an extension of the Indian Ocean ridge system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which extends along the middle of the gulf.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gulf of Aden is <\/span><b>strongly influenced by the upwelling of cool, nutrient-rich waters<\/b> <b>during the southwest and northeast monsoons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is characterized by a prevailing <\/span><b>high-energy climate.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Compared to the neighbouring Red Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Gulf of Aden has a <\/span><b>lower saline content.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the <\/span><b>major cities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near the gulf include <\/span><b>Aden, Mukalla, Ahnwar, Balhaf, Berbera, Bosaso, and Djibouti City.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
