{"id":17509,"date":"2023-11-28T07:52:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T02:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17509"},"modified":"2025-04-05T04:47:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T23:17:36","slug":"glv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/glv\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Leaf Volatiles (GLVs)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Green Leaf Volatiles<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It represents an important group of\u00a0plant volatiles.<\/li>\n<li>They consist of\u00a0six carbon (C6) compounds including alcohols, aldehydes and esters and are released from almost every plant.<\/li>\n<li>The release of GLVs is caused by\u00a0mechanical damage or herbivory by fungal or bacterial infection.<\/li>\n<li>These are implicated in panoply of interactions; they have been reported to repel or\u00a0attract herbivores and their natural enemies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Plants have two major defence mechanisms, involving a chain of molecular reactions.<\/li>\n<li>The reactions are triggered when a\u00a0plant is damaged and GLVs are released as by-products. (By mounting a defence response, plants can make themselves less palatable or even indigestible to the insect attackers.)<\/li>\n<li>The molecular cascade is mediated by calcium, a common mediator of chemical and electrical signals found throughout biology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Volatiles?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These are\u00a0elements or compounds that change from\u00a0solid or liquid state into vapour at relatively low temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>The most common volatiles are\u00a0carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ammonia, hydrogen, methane, sulphur dioxide and water which are abundant in nature and necessary to living organisms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is\u00a0Aldehyde?<\/h3>\n<p>It is any of a class of organic compounds in which a carbon atom shares a double bond with an oxygen atom, a single bond with a hydrogen atom, and a single bond with another atom or group of atoms.
