{"id":17569,"date":"2023-11-30T07:36:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T02:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17569"},"modified":"2025-04-05T05:11:19","modified_gmt":"2025-04-04T23:41:19","slug":"sindhudurg-fort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sindhudurg-fort\/","title":{"rendered":"Sindhudurg Fort"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Sindhudurg Fort<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a historical fort that occupies an islet\u00a0in the Arabian Sea, just\u00a0off the coast of\u00a0Maharashtra in western India.<\/li>\n<li>The fortress lies\u00a0on Kurte Island, very near the\u00a0coast of Malvan town in Sindhudurg District\u00a0in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, 450 kilometres south of Mumbai.<\/li>\n<li>The fort was\u00a0built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of the Maratha Empire.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0construction\u00a0of the fort\u00a0began in 1664 and took three years to complete.<\/li>\n<li>The main objective was\u00a0to counter the rising influence of foreign colonizers (English, Dutch, French, and Portuguese merchants) and to curb the rise of the Siddis of Janjira.<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>It is spread over\u00a048 acres with\u00a0fortified walls that are\u00a029 feet high and 12 feet thick and stretch for two miles.<\/li>\n<li>As many as\u00a052 bastions\u00a0with embrasures for cannons\u00a0guard its walls.<\/li>\n<li>One can enter the fort through the Dilli Darwaja, the main gate. Because of its architectural design, the gate is\u00a0visible only from close quarters and seems to be part of the walls.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0surrounded by\u00a0several\u00a0smaller forts, such as Padmagad, Rajkot, and Sarjekot Forts.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0handprint and footprint of the Maratha King are\u00a0embedded on a slab within the fort.<\/li>\n<li>A small\u00a0temple dedicated to the Chhatrapati also finds a place within the bounds of the fort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) Who was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj?<\/h3>\n<p>He was the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. With his valor and great administrative skills, Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. It eventually became the genesis of the Maratha Empire. He was known as the Father of Indian Navy, Shivaji was the first to realise the importance of having a naval force, and therefore he strategically established a navy and forts at the coastline to defend the Konkan side of Maharashtra. He was a secular ruler who was very accommodating of all religions.
