


{"id":17733,"date":"2023-12-04T05:27:37","date_gmt":"2023-12-03T23:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17733"},"modified":"2025-04-05T06:16:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T00:46:02","slug":"buoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/buoy\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Buoy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Buoy<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A buoy is a\u00a0floating object\u00a0anchored at a definite location to guide or\u00a0warn mariners, to\u00a0mark the positions of submerged objects,\u00a0or to moor vessels in lieu of anchoring.<\/li>\n<li>Buoys are\u00a0often brightly colored and have distinctive shapes or patterns, making them\u00a0easily visible to ships and other watercraft.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Buoys are\u00a0commonly found in harbors and ports, along coastlines, and in rivers and lakes.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0maintained by various\u00a0organizations, such as the Coast Guard and other navigational authorities.<\/li>\n<li>Buoyage system:\n<ul>\n<li>For the sake of maintaining uniformity in buoyage systems worldwide, the\u00a0International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities\u00a0(IALA) divided the world into two regions: Region A and Region B.<\/li>\n<li>Region A includes\u00a0Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa,\u00a0the\u00a0Gulf, and\u00a0some Asian countries, whereas\u00a0Region B comprises North, South, Central America, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines.<\/li>\n<li>IALA proposed a system allowing the\u00a0use of lateral marks in each region, but\u00a0in region A, the\u00a0colour red\u00a0of the lateral system\u00a0is used to mark the port side of channels\u00a0and the\u00a0colour green for the starboard side.<\/li>\n<li>In region B, the colours are reversed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Special-purpose buoys are designed for a variety of uses; they include\u00a0cable buoys, anchor buoys, or race buoys.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0mooring buoy differs from other types in that it is not an aid to navigation but\u00a0a point to which vessels may be tied up.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are starboard side and port side?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0port side is the ship\u2019s left side\u00a0when looking forward towards the bow\u00a0of the ship.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0starboard is right side of the ship when facing the bow.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0bow is the\u00a0part of the ship that is\u00a0generally most forward when the ship is moving. The stern is the back of the ship or its aft-most part.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA)?<\/h3>\n<p>IALA is a non-profit, international technical association. Established in 1957, it gathers together Marine Aids to Navigation authorities, manufacturers, consultants, and scientific and training institutes from all parts of the world and offers them the opportunity to exchange and compare their experiences and achievements.
