{"id":17793,"date":"2026-05-06T12:40:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17793"},"modified":"2026-05-06T12:46:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:16:59","slug":"mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mars\/","title":{"rendered":"Methane Alert and Response System"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Methane Alert and Response System Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the UN Environment Programme\u2019s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) announced that its Methane Alert and Response System will be expanded to cover coal mines and waste facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Methane Alert and Response System<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>data-to-action platform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set up as part of <\/span><b>UNEP\u2019s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) mission.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It aims<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to put <\/span><b>open, reliable and actionable data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the hands of those who can reduce emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the first public <\/span><b>global satellite detection and notification system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providing actionable data on very <\/span><b>large methane emissions around the world.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was announced at the <strong>United Nations Climate Change Conference\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><b>Conference of Parties (COP 27) in November 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and began its initial pilot phase in January 2023.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objective:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It uses satellites to <\/span><b>scan the globe for major emission sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and alerts countries and companies so that they can take methane action and accelerate progress supporting the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/paris-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Agreement<\/a> and Global Methane Pledge.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Working of Methane Alert and Response System<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Detection of large sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of human-caused methane emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Notification of relevant countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and companies about these detected emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Response from notified stakeholders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address the emissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tracking progress of actions taken<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce emissions and collaboration to prevent future methane.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What is the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO)?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was launched at the <\/span><b>G20 Leaders Summit in 2021.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It focused initially on emissions of Methane from the fossil industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reconciles methane data from scientific measurement studies, satellites through the <\/span><b>Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rigorous industry reporting through the <\/span><b>Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and national inventories.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Oil &amp;
