{"id":17884,"date":"2023-12-07T10:53:39","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T05:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17884"},"modified":"2025-04-05T07:17:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T01:47:09","slug":"elephant-endotheliotropic-herpesvirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/elephant-endotheliotropic-herpesvirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0double-stranded DNA virus that is classified in the family\u00a0Herpesviridae.<\/li>\n<li>It causes acute,\u00a0fatal\u00a0haemorrhagic disease in wild and captive juvenile\u00a0Asian and African elephants.<\/li>\n<li>It is lethal for young elephants\u00a0between the ages of one and 12.<\/li>\n<li>The disease is usually fatal, with a\u00a0short course of 28-35 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Transmission:\u00a0Direct contact with body fluids of infected elephants (saliva, shedding from skin lesions, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms:\u00a0Some elephants show symptoms such as reduced appetite, nasal discharge and swollen glands.<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: It includes a combination of\u00a0antiviral therapy,\u00a0aggressive fluid therapy (to counter haemorrhaging),\u00a0immuno-stimulant drugs (selenium and Vitamins C, E), anti-pyretics and analgesics (to bring down fever)<\/li>\n<li>There is no true cure for herpesviruses in animals or in humans because herpes viruses go latent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Viruses?<\/h3>\n<p>These are microscopic organisms that can infect hosts, like humans, plants or animals. They\u2019re a small piece of genetic information (DNA or RNA) inside of a protective shell (capsid). Some viruses also have an envelope. Viruses can\u2019t reproduce without a host.
