{"id":17932,"date":"2023-12-09T09:46:55","date_gmt":"2023-12-09T04:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=17932"},"modified":"2025-04-05T07:36:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T02:06:17","slug":"cd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cd\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Conference on Disarmament (CD)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Conference on Disarmament<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The CD was\u00a0formed in 1979\u00a0as the\u00a0single multilateral disarmament negotiation forum of the international community after agreement was\u00a0reached among Member States\u00a0during the first special\u00a0session of the\u00a0UN General Assembly (UNGA) devoted to disarmament (1978).<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0succeeded other Geneva-based negotiating forums, which include the Ten-Nation Committee on Disarmament (1960), the Eighteen-Nation Committee on Disarmament (1962-68), and the Conference of the Committee on Disarmament (1969-78).<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0CD and its predecessors have negotiated such major multilateral arms limitation and\u00a0disarmament agreements such as\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)<\/li>\n<li>Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on Their Destruction (BWC)<\/li>\n<li>Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (CWC)<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Currently, the CD\u00a0focuses its work on the\u00a0following agenda items:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Cessation of the nuclear arms race and\u00a0nuclear disarmament.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Prevention of nuclear war, including all related matters.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Prevention of an arms race in outer space.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Effective international arrangements to\u00a0assure non-nuclear-weapon states against the use\u00a0or threat of use\u00a0of nuclear weapons.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>New types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons;\u00a0radiological weapons.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensive programme of disarmament.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Transparency\u00a0in armaments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Working:\n<ul>\n<li>The Conference is comprised of\u00a065 member states,\u00a0including the\u00a0five NPT nuclear-weapon states and 60 other states of key military significance.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, every year, non-member states participate, upon their request, in the CD\u2019s work.<\/li>\n<li>The CD has\u00a0three sessions each year.<\/li>\n<li>The CD conducts its\u00a0work by consensus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Relationship with the United Nations (UN):\n<ul>\n<li>While the CD is\u00a0independent of the United Nations, its\u00a0secretary is\u00a0appointed by the UN Secretary-General.<\/li>\n<li>It is required to consider recommendations from the UNGA, and it\u00a0submits reports annually or more often\u00a0to the UNGA.<\/li>\n<li>The CD\u00a0adopts its own Rules of Procedure and its own agenda, taking into account the recommendations of the UNGA and the proposals of its member states.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)?<\/h3>\n<p>NPT is an international treaty that aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
