{"id":18074,"date":"2023-12-12T06:00:36","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T00:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18074"},"modified":"2025-04-05T08:30:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T03:00:57","slug":"red-sprite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/red-sprite\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Red sprite?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Red sprite<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A red sprite represents an\u00a0extraordinary meteorological phenomenon categorized as a Transient Luminous Event (TLE).<\/li>\n<li>Sprite is also an acronym for\u00a0Stratospheric\/mesospheric\u00a0Perturbations\u00a0Resulting\u00a0from Intense Thunderstorm Electrification.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Occasionally dubbed red lightning, it occurs above thunderclouds at\u00a0altitudes between 40 and 80 kilometres (25 &#8211; 50 miles) above the Earth&#8217;s surface.<\/li>\n<li>Lightning flashes normally go downward from the clouds to the ground.<\/li>\n<li>However, a sprite goes in the\u00a0other direction, going into the atmosphere, a bit like backwards lightning.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0happens incredibly quickly &#8211; in about a millisecond &#8211; which can make it tricky for scientists to capture and observe them.<\/li>\n<li>Also, as the red sprites form above thunder clouds, they are not easily studied from Earth and are mostly seen from space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other Transient Luminous Event<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Blue jets:\u00a0These\u00a0are quite faint and blue in colour and so this can make them tricky to spot. It is similar to red sprite.<\/li>\n<li>Elves: These are a type of TLE which form\u00a0expanding ring shaped glows. They take place around 100 km (about 62 miles) above the ground over thunderstorms and happen so quickly they can&#8217;t be seen with the naked eye.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is stratosphere?<\/h3>\n<p>The stratosphere is a layer of Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. It is the second layer of the atmosphere as you go upward. The troposphere, the lowest layer, is right below the stratosphere.
