{"id":18082,"date":"2024-06-20T06:24:40","date_gmt":"2024-06-20T00:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18082"},"modified":"2025-10-14T11:03:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T05:33:23","slug":"stonehenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/stonehenge\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Stonehenge?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Stonehenge:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>prehistoric stone circle monument<\/strong> and archaeological site located in Wiltshire, <strong>England<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is comprised of roughly 100 <strong>massive upright stones<\/strong> placed in a <strong>circular layout.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>built in several stages<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>first monument<\/strong> was an early henge monument, built about <strong>5,000 years ago<\/strong>, and the <strong>unique stone circle<\/strong> was <strong>erected in the late Neolithic period,<\/strong> about <strong>2500 BC.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>early Bronze Age<\/strong>, many <strong>burial mounds were built nearby<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Though there is <strong>no definite evidence<\/strong> as to the <strong>intended purpose<\/strong> of Stonehenge, it was <strong>presumably a religious site<\/strong> and an expression of the power and wealth of the chieftains, aristocrats, and priests who had it built.<\/li>\n<li>It is just one <strong>part of a larger sacred landscape<\/strong> that contained many other stone and wooden structures, as well as burials.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>aligned with the Sun<\/strong> and <strong>possibly used for observing the Sun and Moonand working out<\/strong> the <strong>farming calendar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Along with more than 350 nearby monuments and henges (ancient earthworks consisting of a circular bank and ditch), including the kindred temple complex at Avebury, Stonehenge was designated a <strong>UNESCO <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/unesco-world-heritage-sites-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Heritage Site <\/a>in 1986.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?<\/h3>\n<p>A World Heritage Site (WHS) is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by UNESCO under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972.
