While\u00a0three pairs are used for swimming\u00a0in the water,\u00a0eight pairs are used\u00a0for walking on land. The other\u00a0two pairs are used\u00a0for capturing prey and feeding.<\/li>\n<li>The species can be distinguished from the other members of the genus by two\u00a0to three strong, hair-like structures,\u00a0or setae,\u00a0on the anterior margin of the propodus of the gnathopod.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Amphipods?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Amphipod are any member of the\u00a0invertebrate order Amphipoda (class Crustacea) inhabiting all parts of the sea, lakes, rivers, sand beaches, caves, and moist (warm) habitats on many tropical islands.<\/li>\n<li>They are often\u00a0mistaken for tiny shrimp, which they resemble.<\/li>\n<li>They can be\u00a0found in all marine habitats (even the deepest ocean trenches, e.g., Hirondellea dubia), and have\u00a0also colonised freshwater and terrestrial habitats.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0generic diversity of amphipods is apparently\u00a0higher in cool waters than in warm ones.<\/li>\n<li>Freshwater and marine\u00a0beach species are commonly\u00a0known as scuds; those\u00a0that occupy sand beaches are called sand hoppers, or sand fleas (see sand flea).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They range in size from a millimetre in length to the supergiant amphipod Alicella gigantea at 340 mm.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0important food for many fish, invertebrates, penguins, shore birds, small cetaceans, and pinnipeds.<\/li>\n<li>Most amphipods are\u00a0active swimmers, propelled by three pairs of abdominal appendages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are crustaceans?<\/h3>\n<p>These are members of the subphylum Crustacea (phylum Arthropoda). They are found in a wide range of habitats &#8211; most are free-living freshwater or marine animals, but some are terrestrial. They are invertebrates with a hard exoskeleton (carapace), a segmented body that is bilaterally symmetrical, more than four pairs of jointed appendages (&#8220;legs&#8221;) and an open circulatory system.
