{"id":18110,"date":"2023-12-13T03:03:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T21:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18110"},"modified":"2025-04-05T08:45:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T03:15:40","slug":"saiga-antelope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/saiga-antelope\/","title":{"rendered":"Saiga Antelope"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Saiga Antelope<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a large\u00a0migratory herbivore.<\/li>\n<li>Appearance:\n<ul>\n<li>This antelope has an extremely unusual appearance with an\u00a0over-sized and flexible nose, the internal structure of which acts like a filter.<\/li>\n<li>Their large noses filter out dust kicked up by the herd in the warm summers and warms the icy air before it reaches their lungs in the winters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Habitat: It inhabits open\u00a0dry steppe grasslands and semi-arid deserts.<\/li>\n<li>Distribution:\n<ul>\n<li>The antelope were once found throughout the Eurasian Steppe, the great band of grassland that stretches from Hungary in Europe to Manchuria in Asia.<\/li>\n<li>Presently it is found in fragmented populations within\u00a0Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Saiga has\u00a0two sub-species: Saiga tatarica tatarica (found in most of the range) and Saiga tatarica mongolica (found only in Mongolia).<\/li>\n<li>Conservation status\n<ul>\n<li>IUCN: Near threatened<\/li>\n<li>CITES :Appendix II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Threats: Hunting and habitat destruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is steppe Biome?<\/h3>\n<p>It refers to a large flatland with grasses or shrubs but without any trees. This flatland is usually found in areas with a climate that is not wet enough to support the growth of a forest although not dry enough to be classified as a desert. Any trees located in these regions are located close to water bodies such as lakes and rivers. In some parts of the world, a steppe is known by a different name.
