{"id":18155,"date":"2023-12-14T03:12:07","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T21:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18155"},"modified":"2025-04-05T09:02:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T03:32:27","slug":"terai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/terai\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Terai?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Terai<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Terai, or Tarai, is a\u00a0lowland belt of flat, alluvial land stretching\u00a0along the Nepal-India border and running\u00a0parallel to the\u00a0lower ranges of the Himalayas.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>A strip of\u00a0undulating former marshland, it\u00a0stretches from the\u00a0Yamuna River in the west\u00a0to the\u00a0Brahmaputra River in the east.<\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0northern extension of the Gangetic Plain in India, commencing at about 300 meters above sea level and rising to about 1,000 meters at the foot of the Siwalik Range.<\/li>\n<li>In India, the Terai extends over the states of\u00a0Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It extends nearly 800 km from east to west and about 30-40 km from north to south.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0average elevation\u00a0is below 750 m.<\/li>\n<li>The flatland of Terai was formed by Gangetic alluvium consisting of beds of silt, clay, sand, pebbles, and gravel.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0its northern edge are numerous springs\u00a0forming\u00a0several\u00a0streams,\u00a0including the important\u00a0Ghaghara River (left-bank tributary of the Ganges River), that\u00a0intersect the Tarai and are\u00a0responsible for its marshy character.<\/li>\n<li>The landscape boasts some of India\u2019s best-known tiger reserves and protected areas\u00a0such as\u00a0Corbett Tiger Reserve,\u00a0Rajaji National Park,\u00a0Dudhwa Tiger Reserve,\u00a0and Valmiki Tiger Reserve. In total, the landscape has 13 protected Areas, nine in India and four in Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>Interspersed with the Tarai is the Bhabar, which is a\u00a0region of coarse gravel and shingle deposits supporting sal (Shorea robusta) forests.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0eastern part of the Tarai\u00a0is known in West Bengal state\u00a0and in Bangladesh as the Duars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is silt?<\/h3>\n<p>Silt is a solid, dust-like sediment that water, ice, and wind transport and deposit.
