text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an indigenous <\/span><b>star-rating system for crash testing cars,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under which vehicles will be assigned between <\/span><b>one to five stars, indicating their safety in a collision.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an ambitious joint project between the <\/span><b>Government of India (GoI) and Global NCAP, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>regulatory body behind the safety crash test ratings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>launched <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 22 August <\/span><b>2023 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and commenced on 1 October 2023.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Objective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: To <\/span><b>help consumers make an informed decision <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before purchasing a car, thereby spurring demand for safer cars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the Bharat NCAP,<\/span><b> cars voluntarily nominated by automobile manufacturers will be crash tested<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as per protocols laid down in the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicles tested under the Bharat NCAP are<\/span><b> evaluated across<\/b> <b>three critical safety domains: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Applicability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Only right-hand drive passenger vehicles on sale in India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>weighing less than 3,500 kg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are eligible for consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Base variants <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of cars are to be tested, and <\/span><b>ratings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be <\/span><b>applicable for four years.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides<\/span><b> internal combustion engine (ICE) models, CNG cars <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as b<\/span><b>attery-powered electric vehicles are eligible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to undergo the safety test.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>voluntary programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under which the cost of the car for assessment for star rating and the cost of such assessment are borne by the respective vehicle manufacturer or importer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat NCAP is <\/span><b>overseen by the Ministry of Road Transport, but is an independent body.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current Bharat NCAP regulations remain <\/span><b>valid until September 30, 2027, after which Bharat NCAP 2.0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected to be implemented by October 2027.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Bharat NCAP 2.0 Proposed Guidelines<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It brings in <\/span><b>fresh mandatory tests, revised scoring methods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and up<\/span><b>dated safety verticals.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, <\/span><b>for the first tim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e, vehicles will be <\/span><b>assessed on vulnerable road user protection.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bharat NCAP 2.0 proposal introduces a<\/span><b> 100-point rating system across five pillars: Crash Protection, Vulnerable Road-User Protection, Safe Driving, Accident Avoidance, and Post-Crash Safety.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crash test will be expanded from two to five and will now have Male, female, and child dummies for testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cars will go through offset frontal impact, full-width frontal impact, side impact, pole side impact, and rear impact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Electronic stability control (ESC) and curtain airbags will be compulsory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any model seeking a star rating.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) remains optional.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Models with side-facing seats will not be eligible for a rating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>From 2027-29, a 5-star rating will require 70 points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this would <\/span><b>rise to 80 points from 2029-31<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
