{"id":18288,"date":"2023-12-18T08:11:45","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T02:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18288"},"modified":"2025-04-05T09:58:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T04:28:06","slug":"sam-upsc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sam-upsc\/","title":{"rendered":"Akash Surface-To-Air Missile (SAM) Defence System"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In the recent\u00a0Exercise Astrashakti 2023,\u00a0a single unit of the Akash weapon system\u00a0successfully engaged and obliterated\u00a0four unmanned targets simultaneously.<\/li>\n<li>This demonstration\u00a0established India as the first country to exhibit the\u00a0ability to engage four targets\u00a0at such distances\u00a0simultaneously using\u00a0command guidance from a\u00a0single firing unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) Defence System:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SRSAM) Defence System to protect vulnerable areas and points from air attacks.<\/li>\n<li>It was indigenously designed and\u00a0developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>It can\u00a0simultaneously engage multiple targets and destroy manoeuvring targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, and missiles launched from helicopters.<\/li>\n<li>It has built-in\u00a0Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) features.<\/li>\n<li>The entire weapon system has been configured to be launched from static or mobile platforms such as battle tanks and wheeled trucks, providing flexible deployment.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0road and rail transportable, with quick mobilization and deployment capabilities.<\/li>\n<li>It can\u00a0engage aerial targets up to a\u00a0range of approximately 25km.<\/li>\n<li>Altitude of Operation: 100 m up to 20 km<\/li>\n<li>Weight: 710 kg<\/li>\n<li>Guidance System: Command Guidance<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0fully automatic, with a quick response time from target detection to kill.<\/li>\n<li>It has an\u00a0open-system architecture that ensures\u00a0adaptability to existing and\u00a0futuristic air defence environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)?<\/h3>\n<p>The DRDO is an agency of the Government of India responsible for the research and development of technology and equipment related to defense and military applications.
