{"id":18307,"date":"2023-12-18T07:00:50","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T01:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18307"},"modified":"2025-04-05T10:04:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T04:34:49","slug":"noma-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/noma-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Noma disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Noma disease<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a rapidly progressing severe gangrenous\u00a0disease of the mouth and the face.<\/li>\n<li>The disease, also called\u00a0cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis, is mostly found in\u00a0sub-Saharan Africa.<\/li>\n<li>It mostly affects\u00a0children aged 2\u20136 years suffering\u00a0from malnutrition, affected by infectious diseases, living in extreme poverty with poor oral health or with weakened immune systems.<\/li>\n<li>It can also occur among\u00a0immunocompromised adults due to HIV, leukaemia and other diseases.<\/li>\n<li>It starts as a soft tissue lesion (a sore) of the gums.<\/li>\n<li>It then develops into an acute necrotizing gingivitis that progresses rapidly, destroying the soft tissues and further progressing to involve the hard tissues and skin of the face.<\/li>\n<li>It is generally considered an opportunistic and non-contagious disease.<\/li>\n<li>Indeed, cases are seen in African countries outside this area as well as in other parts of the world, including\u00a0Asia and Asia-Pacific, the Americas,\u00a0the Middle East and Europe.<\/li>\n<li>Evidence indicates that the causative agents of noma are non-specific polymicrobial organisms.<\/li>\n<li>There is no documented evidence to support direct transmission from person to person.<\/li>\n<li>Treatment\n<ul>\n<li>Early detection is essential, as therapy is most effective at the early stages of disease when it appears as aggressively swollen gums (acute necrotizing gingivitis).<\/li>\n<li>Treatment typically includes prescription of widely available antibiotics, advice and support on practices to improve oral hygiene, disinfectant mouthwash and nutrition supplements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Neglected tropical diseases ?<\/h3>\n<p>Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of tropical infections which are common in low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They are caused by a variety of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, protozoa and parasitic worms (helminths).
