


{"id":18394,"date":"2025-10-27T10:57:55","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T05:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18394"},"modified":"2025-10-29T10:39:35","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T05:09:35","slug":"late-blight-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/late-blight-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Late Blight disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About is Late Blight Disease:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is one of the most <strong>serious fungal diseases<\/strong> that can <strong>affect tomatoes and potatoes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is <strong>spread from infected transplants<\/strong>, volunteer potato or tomato plants, and certain weeds botanically related to tomatoes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spores of this fungus<\/strong> can be <strong>airborne<\/strong> and <strong>travel great distances<\/strong> in storms. <strong>Rain deposits spores on plants<\/strong>, causing infection.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Late blight is <strong>favored by cool, wet weather<\/strong> and will <strong>cycle repeatedly<\/strong> if weather conditions are favorable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>When plants have become infected, <strong>lesions<\/strong> (round or irregularly shaped areas that range in colour from dark green to purplish black and resemble frost injury) <strong>appear on the leaves, petioles, and stems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>whitish growth<\/strong> of spore-producing structures may appear at the margin of the lesions <strong>on theunder leaf surfaces.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Potato tubers develop rot <\/strong>up to 15 mm (0.6 inch) deep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondary fungi and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/bacteria\/\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a> (particularly Erwinia species) often <strong>invade potato tubers<\/strong> and <strong>produce rotting<\/strong> that results in great losses during storage, transit, and marketing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>disease<\/strong> can be <strong>managed with<\/strong> a timely <strong>application of fungicide<\/strong>, though epidemics can occur rapidly once crops are infected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Fungi?<\/h3>\n<p>Fungi, along with Animalia (animals), Plantae (plants), Protista, Archaea\/Archaebacteria, and Bacteria or Eubacteria form the six \u2018kingdoms\u2019 of biology. They are eukaryotic organisms; i.e., their cells contain membrane-bound organelles and clearly defined nuclei. Fungi usually reproduce both sexually and asexually. Fungi are either terrestrial or aquatic, the latter living in freshwater or marine environments.
