{"id":18439,"date":"2024-07-09T03:20:44","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T21:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18439"},"modified":"2025-04-05T10:55:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T05:25:07","slug":"mitochondrial-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mitochondrial-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Mitochondrial Diseases?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Mitochondrial Disease:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Mitochondrial diseases are a group of conditions that <strong>affect how mitochondria work in your body.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What are Mitochondria?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Mitochondria are <strong>membrane-bound cell organelles<\/strong> that <strong>generate<\/strong> most of the <strong>chemical energy <\/strong>needed to <strong>power the cell&#8217;s biochemical reactions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They make it <strong>by combining oxygen with the fuel molecules<\/strong> (sugars and fats) that come <strong>from your food<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Chemical <strong>energy<\/strong> produced by the mitochondria is <strong>stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Generally, mitochondria, and therefore <strong>mitochondrial DNA,<\/strong> are <strong>inherited only from the mother.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>When the mitochondria are defective, the cells do not have enough energy.<\/strong> The unused oxygen and fuel molecules build up in the cells and cause damage.<\/li>\n<li>Mitochondrial <strong>diseases can affect almost any part of your body<\/strong>, including the cells of your Brain, Nerves, Muscles, Kidneys, Heart, Liver, Eyes, Ears, and Pancreas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Causes<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Genetic mutations<\/strong> cause these primary mitochondrial diseases. They usually happen before age 20, and some are more common in infants.<\/li>\n<li>Mitochondrial dysfunction can also occur <strong>when mitochondria don\u2019t work as well as they should due to another disease<\/strong> or condition. These are called <strong>secondary mitochondrial diseases.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The symptoms of mitochondrial disease can vary. It de<strong>pends on how many mitochondria are defective <\/strong>and where they are in the body.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes only one organ, tissue, or cell type is affected. But often, the problem affects many of them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Muscle and nerve cells have especially high energy needs, so <strong>muscular and neurological problems are common.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>There are <strong>no cures for these diseases<\/strong>, but <strong>treatments may help with symptoms<\/strong> and slow down the disease.<\/li>\n<li>They may include <strong>physical therapy, vitamins and supplements<\/strong>, special diets, and medicines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is mitochondria?<\/h3>\n<p>Mitochondria are special compartments (organelles) in our cells that are best known for their role as powerhouses, as they breakdown food molecules and turn out ATP, a molecular fuel for the rest of the cell. However, they carry out many other important biological processes and are central to the correct functioning of the human cell.
