{"id":18471,"date":"2023-12-22T05:37:38","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T00:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18471"},"modified":"2025-04-05T11:08:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T05:38:03","slug":"channa-barca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/channa-barca\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Channa Barca?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Channa Barca<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Channa Barca, also known as the\u00a0Barca Snakehead, is a\u00a0primitive predatory fish and member of the family Channidae.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPipli Cheng\u201d or \u201cCheng Garaka\u201d is the local name for Channa Barca.<\/li>\n<li>Distribution:\n<ul>\n<li>It is\u00a0endemic to the upper Brahmaputra river basin in\u00a0northeastern India and\u00a0Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<li>In India, it is restricted to the states of\u00a0Assam and Nagaland in northeastern India but is\u00a0scarce and\u00a0never collected in numbers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Habitat:\n<ul>\n<li>It\u00a0inhabits vertical burrows\u00a0around the margins of\u00a0wetlands, which typically become dry during the winter months.<\/li>\n<li>The fish\u00a0use them as refuges during the dry winter months, emerging to hunt and breed while the habitat is flooded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Since it is a\u00a0rare, ornamental fish, it is in\u00a0high demand in the international market and is\u00a0susceptible to illegal trade.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>Channa have an\u00a0elongated body and are distinguished by their\u00a0long dorsal fins and\u00a0large mouths full of teeth.<\/li>\n<li>It often\u00a0has changing patterns\u00a0and colors as it grows.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The maximum size of the fish is 80-90 cm.<\/li>\n<li>They earn their common\u00a0name Snakehead because of their\u00a0flattened shape and the scales on their heads that are reminiscent of the large epidermal scales on snakes.<\/li>\n<li>Channa\u00a0has gills to breathe water like most other fish.\u00a0However, sub adults and adults can also breathe air to supplement their demand for oxygen.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Conservation Status:\u00a0Overall, it has been assessed as data deficient by the IUCN, and in 2014, it was\u00a0assessed by the IUCN as critically endangered\u00a0due to habitat loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is IUCN?<\/h3>\n<p>The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organizations.
