


{"id":18491,"date":"2024-08-02T06:51:20","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T01:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18491"},"modified":"2025-04-05T11:15:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T05:45:42","slug":"psh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/psh\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Pumped Storage Hydro Power (PSH)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>PSH is a type of <strong>hydroelectric energy storage<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>PSH is a fundamentally simple system that <strong>consists of two water reservoirsat different elevations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Working<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>When there is excess electricity<\/strong> available, such as during off-peak hours or from renewable sources like solar and wind, <strong>it is used to pump water from<\/strong> the <strong>lower reservoir to<\/strong> the <strong>upper reservoir.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>When there is a demand for electricity<\/strong>, the <strong>water is released from<\/strong> the <strong>upper reservoir<\/strong> back down <strong>to the lower reservoir<\/strong>, <strong>passing through turbines<\/strong> that <strong>generate electricity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>system also requires power<\/strong> as it pumps water back into the upper reservoir (recharge).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>PSH plants operate much like conventional hydropower plants, except PSH has the <strong>ability to use the same water over and over again<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The technology absorbs surplus energy at times of low demand and releases it when demand is high.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>energy storage capacity<\/strong> of a PSH <strong>depends on the size of<\/strong> its <strong>two reservoirs<\/strong>, while the amount of power generated is linked to the size of the turbine.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>two main types of PSH:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open-loop:<\/strong> with either an upper or lower <strong>reservoir<\/strong> that is <strong>continuously connected to a naturally flowing water source<\/strong> such as a river.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Closed-loop:an \u2018off-river\u2019 site<\/strong> that produces power from water pumped to an upper reservoir <strong>without a significant natural inflow<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Turbine?<\/h3>\n<p>A turbine is a device that harnesses the kinetic energy of some fluid &#8211; such as water, steam, air, or combustion gases &#8211; and turns this into the rotational motion of the device itself.
