{"id":18550,"date":"2023-12-24T08:09:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-24T02:39:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18550"},"modified":"2025-04-05T11:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T06:07:13","slug":"bess","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bess\/","title":{"rendered":"Battery Energy Storage Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Battery Energy Storage Systems<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This scheme envisages the development of\u00a04,000 MWh of BESS projects\u00a0by 2030-31.<\/li>\n<li>Funding:\n<ul>\n<li>Financial support of up to\u00a040% of the capital cost as budgetary support in the form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF) is provided by the union government.<\/li>\n<li>The VGF shall be disbursed in five tranches linked with the various stages of implementation of BESS projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>By offering VGF support, the scheme targets achieving a\u00a0Levelized Cost of Storage (LCoS) ranging from Rs. 5.50-6.60 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), making stored renewable energy a viable option for managing peak power demand across the country.<\/li>\n<li>For passing on the scheme to consumers of the Discoms, at\u00a0least 85% of the power from VGF-funded BESS projects shall be\u00a0first offered to Discoms before making it available for others.<\/li>\n<li>The selection of BESS developers for VGF grants will be carried out through a\u00a0transparent, competitive bidding process, promoting a level playing field for both public and private sector entities.<\/li>\n<li>Significance:\n<ul>\n<li>This will not only enhance the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid but also\u00a0minimise wastage while optimising the utilisation of transmission networks.<\/li>\n<li>This will reduce the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.<\/li>\n<li>The competitive bidding process approach will foster healthy competition and encourage the growth of a robust ecosystem for BESS, attracting significant investments and generating opportunities for associated industries.<\/li>\n<li>This scheme is designed to\u00a0harness the potential of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power; the scheme aims to provide clean, reliable, and affordable electricity to the citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Renewable energy?<\/h3>\n<p>Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed.
