Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Maharashtra government has officially declared leprosy a \u201cnotifiable disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Leprosy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leprosy is an <\/span><b>infectious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a type of bacteria called <\/span><b>Mycobacterium leprae.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as <\/span><b>Hansen\u2019s disease.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It primarily affects the <\/span><b>skin, peripheral nerves, eyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other organs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>neglected tropical disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NTD) which still occurs in more than 120 countries, with around 200 000 new cases reported every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was declared <\/span><b>notifiable in 2005 uniformly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP), Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Transmission of Leprosy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is <\/span><b>transmitted through droplets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the nose and mouth of an untreated case of leprosy, <\/span><b>containing the causative agent, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following prolonged, close contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease d<\/span><b>oes not spread through casual contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like shaking hands or hugging, sharing meals or sitting next to each other).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The patient stops transmitting the disease upon initiation of treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Leprosy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It usually takes about <\/span><b>3 to 5 years for symptoms to appear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after you come into contact with the bacteria that cause leprosy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main symptom of leprosy is disfiguring <\/span><b>skin sores, lumps, or bumps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t go away after several weeks or months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, body parts may lose their sense of touch and pain, increasing the likelihood of injuries such as cuts and burns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Treatment of Leprosy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leprosy is a <\/span><b>curable disease.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The currently recommended treatment regimen consists of <\/span><b>three medicines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dapsone, rifampicin and clofazimine) and is referred to as <\/span><b>multi-drug therapy (MDT).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a
