all healthcare providers to report every new case of leprosy to the District Leprosy Officer, the government recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Leprosy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leprosy, also known as <\/span><b>Hansen\u2019s disease,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><b>infectious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a type of <\/span><b>bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>primarily affects <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> skin,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>peripheral nerves,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the mucosa of the <\/span><b>upper respiratory tract, and the eyes.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> neglected tropical disease (NTD)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which still occurs in more than 120 countries, with around 200000 new cases reported every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>People <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affected by the disease<\/span><b> often face social isolation and discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in regions where the illness is more common.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Leprosy <\/b><b>Transmission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease is transmitted through <\/span><b>droplets from the nose and mouth of an untreated case <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of leprosy, containing the causative agent,<\/span><b> following prolonged, close contact.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease does <\/span><b>not spread through casual contact <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(like shaking hands or hugging, sharing meals or sitting next to each other).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> patient stops transmitting <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the disease <\/span><b>upon initiation of treatment.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Leprosy <\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>usually takes about 3 to 5 years for symptoms to appear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after you come into contact with the bacteria that cause leprosy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main symptom is <\/span><b>disfiguring skin sores, lumps, or bumps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>don\u2019t go away after several weeks or months.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In some cases, body parts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may <\/span><b>lose their sense of touch and pain,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increasing the likelihood of injuries such as cuts and burns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Left untreated,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the disease may cause<\/span><b> progressive and permanent disabilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can cause <\/span><b>permanent paralysis, blindness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>damage to your hands, feet, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and face.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Leprosy <\/b><b>Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leprosy is a<\/span><b> curable disease.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The currently recommended treatment regimen consists of three medicines (dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine) and is referred to as <\/span><b>multi-drug
