{"id":18598,"date":"2026-01-27T12:07:41","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T06:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18598"},"modified":"2026-01-27T15:19:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T09:49:43","slug":"indian-ocean-naval-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-ocean-naval-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian Ocean Naval Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Indian Ocean Naval Symposium Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boosting maritime engagement with Indonesia, a key member of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), and advancing the vision of MAHASAGAR, the Indian Navy\u2019s First Training Squadron (1TS) departed Belawan recently, after a successful three-day port call.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Indian Ocean Naval Symposium\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> voluntary initiative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that seeks to increase <\/span><b>maritime cooperation among navies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the l<\/span><b>ittoral states of the Indian Ocean Region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by providing an <\/span><b>open and inclusive forum <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for discussion of regionally relevant maritime issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It promotes maritime cooperation, mutual understanding, and collaboration on issues such as <\/span><b>maritime security and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the process, it endeavours to generate a <\/span><b>flow of information between naval professionals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would lead to common understanding and possibly cooperative solutions on the way ahead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>conceived by the Indian Navy in 2008.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> inaugural edition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of IONS was held in <\/span><b>Feb 2008 at New Delhi, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the <\/span><b>Indian Navy as the Chair for two years <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2008\u20132010).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IONS is structured around a <\/span><b>rotating chairmanship, biennial conclaves of chiefs, and working groups.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 36 littoral in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Ocean<\/a><\/strong>, which have been geographically <\/span><b>grouped into the following four sub-regions:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>South Asian Littorals:<\/b> <b>Bangladesh, India,<\/b> <b>Maldives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Pakistan, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and United Kingdom <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(British Indian Ocean Territory)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>West Asian Littorals:<\/b> <b>Iran<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>East African Littorals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> France (Reunion), Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, South Africa, and Tanzania.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>South East Asian and Australian Littorals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Timor-Leste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Observers:<\/b> <b>China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Germany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Italy, <\/span><b>Japan,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Madagascar, the Netherlands, <\/span><b>Russia, and <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indian Ocean Naval Symposium is a voluntary initiative that seeks to increase maritime cooperation among navies of the littoral states of the Indian Ocean Region.
