{"id":18643,"date":"2024-10-30T05:00:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T23:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18643"},"modified":"2025-04-05T12:11:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T06:41:29","slug":"cwd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cwd\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>progressive and fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk, moose<\/strong>, and other <strong>cervids<\/strong> (members of the deer family).<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s <strong>caused by abnormal proteins called prions<\/strong> that <strong>damage brain tissue<\/strong>, leading to severe neurological symptoms, weight loss, and <strong>eventually death.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>CWD is part of a <strong>group of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs),<\/strong> which also include mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>CWD spreads between animals <strong>through bodily fluids,<\/strong> like saliva, urine, and feces, as <strong>well as contaminated soil and plants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There is currently <strong>no evidence that CWD can infect humans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The disease <strong>can persist in the environment for long periods<\/strong>, making it challenging to control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms appear slowly and may include <strong>drastic weight loss<\/strong>, lack of coordination, <strong>drooling<\/strong>, <strong>excessive thirst, lack of fear of humans,<\/strong> and eventually death.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms might not be visible for up to 16 months after infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>: It is <strong>always fata<\/strong>l in infected animals.
