{"id":18647,"date":"2024-11-26T04:52:38","date_gmt":"2024-11-25T23:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18647"},"modified":"2025-04-05T12:13:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T06:43:03","slug":"pterosaur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pterosaur\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Pterosaur?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Pterosaurs:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pterosaurs were highly successful <strong>flying reptiles<\/strong> that flourished during all periods (Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous) of the <strong>Mesozoic Era<\/strong> (252.2 million to 66 million years ago).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Pterosaurs were not only the <strong>first reptiles capable of flight;<\/strong> they were also the <strong>first vertebrates to fly<\/strong>, a feat they accomplished by using strong forelegs to launch their bodies into the air.<\/li>\n<li>Although pterosaurs are <strong>notdinosaurs<\/strong>, <strong>both are archosaurs<\/strong>, or <strong>\u201cruling reptiles,\u201d<\/strong> a group to which birds and crocodiles also belong.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It included the <strong>largest vertebrate ever known to fly<\/strong>: the <strong>late Cretaceous Quetzalcoatlus.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Pterosaurs are <strong>not closely related to<\/strong> either <strong>birds or bats<\/strong> and thus provide a <strong>classic example of convergent evolution.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>wings<\/strong> were <strong>formed by a membrane of skin<\/strong> that was <strong>connected to the hand by<\/strong> an <strong>elongated fourth finger,<\/strong> not unlike the fleshy wings of bats.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier species had long, fully-toothed jaws and long tails, while later forms had a highly reduced tail and some lacked teeth.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong>often had long necks<\/strong>, which sometimes had throat <strong>pouches<\/strong> similar to pelicans&#8217; for catching fish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The pterosaurs went <strong>extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period<\/strong>, around 65.5 million years ago, <strong>during<\/strong> the mass extinction known as the <strong>Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event<\/strong> (K-T extinction event).<\/li>\n<li>When the pterosaurs disappeared, <strong>their role<\/strong> as the dominant vertebrates in the skies was <strong>taken over by the birds<\/strong>, which are considered to be of dinosaur ancestry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is convergent evolution?<\/h3>\n<p>Convergent evolution occurs when organisms that aren\u2019t closely related evolve similar features or behaviors, often as solutions to the same problems.
