{"id":18807,"date":"2023-12-31T07:23:42","date_gmt":"2023-12-31T01:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18807"},"modified":"2025-04-05T13:13:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T07:43:03","slug":"unrwa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/unrwa\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0UN agency that supports the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees.<\/li>\n<li>Establishment:\n<ul>\n<li>Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, UNRWA was established by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 302 (IV) of 8 December, 1949, to carry out direct relief and work programmes for Palestine refugees.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The agency\u00a0began operations on 1 May, 1950.<\/li>\n<li>In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the UNGA Assembly has\u00a0repeatedly renewed UNRWA&#8217;s mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June, 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0one of the largest United Nations programmes, with a population of approximately 5 million registered Palestine refugees under its mandate and over 30,000 staff.<\/li>\n<li>Fields of operations: It provides services in its\u00a0five fields of operations:\u00a0Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including the East of Jerusalem.<\/li>\n<li>UNRWA is unique in that it\u00a0delivers services directly to its beneficiaries.<\/li>\n<li>Services provided: It encompasses\u00a0education, health care, relief and social services,\u00a0camp infrastructure and improvement,\u00a0microfinance,\u00a0and\u00a0emergency assistance, including in times of armed conflict.<\/li>\n<li>Funding:\n<ul>\n<li>It is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions\u00a0from\u00a0UN Member States.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0also receives some funding from the Regular Budget of the United Nations, which is used mostly for international staffing costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0reports only to the UNGA.<\/li>\n<li>Headquarters: It was originally headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon, but was moved to Vienna, Austria, in 1978. In 1996, the General Assembly moved the agency to the\u00a0Gaza Strip to demonstrate the Assembly\u2019s commitment to the Arab-Israeli peace process.<\/li>\n<li>Its chief officer, the commissioner-general, the only leader of a UN agency to report directly to the General Assembly, is\u00a0appointed by the UN secretary-general with the approval of an Advisory Commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Gaza Strip?<\/h3>\n<p>The Gaza Strip or simply Gaza, is a Palestinian enclave on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Egypt on the southwest for 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) and Israel on the east and north along a 51 km (32 mi) border. The Gaza Strip and the West Bank are claimed by the de jure sovereign State of Palestine. The territories of Gaza and the West Bank are separated from each other by Israeli territory.
