{"id":18811,"date":"2023-12-31T07:36:11","date_gmt":"2023-12-31T02:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18811"},"modified":"2025-04-05T13:14:35","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T07:44:35","slug":"guyana-venezuela-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/guyana-venezuela-conflict\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Guyana-Venezuela Conflict?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Guyana-Venezuela Conflict<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>History:\n<ul>\n<li>The land boundary between Guyana and Venezuela has been disputed\u00a0since its colonial inception between British and Spanish powers in South America.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In the 1840s, the\u00a0British government had the border unilaterally surveyed, but the proposed line encroached on Venezuelan territorial claims.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0boundary has since been arbitrated (1899) and bilaterally agreed upon following demarcation (1905), but remains in conflict.<\/li>\n<li>While the\u00a0British line, accepted by Guyana, is the\u00a0current de facto boundary,\u00a0Venezuela maintains a historic claim to all territory\u00a0currently administered by Guyana\u00a0west of the Essequibo River.<\/li>\n<li>Venezuelan contents that the Arbitral Award of 1899 about the frontier between British Guiana and Venezuela\u00a0is null and void.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Disputed Area:\n<ul>\n<li>The bone of contention lies in the\u00a0densely forested Essequibo region\u00a0of Guyana, which Venezuela claims as its territory.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Venezuela\u2019s claim\u00a0along the Essequibo River extends for 1,034 kilometers before reaching Brazilian territory.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At stake is approximately\u00a0142,795 square kilometers that is currently\u00a0administered by Guyana.<\/li>\n<li>Offshore, the disputed land\u00a0territory\u00a0is a\u00a0maritime space that was recently\u00a0discovered to be rich in hydrocarbon resources, upping the stakes of the land boundary dispute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Current Status:\n<ul>\n<li>Guyana submitted the dispute\u00a0to the\u00a0International Court of Justice in 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Despite\u00a0Venezuela\u2019s withdrawal from the case, proceedings are currently ongoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the International Court of Justice (ICJ)?<\/h3>\n<p>The International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, is the main judicial organ of the UN. It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946.
