{"id":18824,"date":"2026-09-19T11:27:55","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T05:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18824"},"modified":"2026-09-19T16:48:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T11:18:27","slug":"bhil-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bhil-tribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Bhil Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Bhil Tribe Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rajasthan High Court recently issued notices to the State government and other authorities on a petition seeking a 9% sub-quota for the Bhil community within the existing 12% reservation for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Bhil Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bhils are considered <\/span><b>one of the oldest tribes in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are identified as <\/span><b>one of the Dravidian racial tribes of Western India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and belong to the <\/span><b>Australoid group of tribes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2011 census, Bhil is the<\/span><b> largest tribal group in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, constituting approximately <\/span><b>38% of the total scheduled tribal population of India.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>name \u2018Bhil\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is derived from the <\/span><b>word \u201cvillu\u201d or \u201cbillu\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, according to the Dravidian language, is known as <\/span><b>Bow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their <\/span><b>reference <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in old literature, <\/span><b>Ramayana and Mahabharata.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Distribution:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are the <\/span><b>most widely distributed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tribal groups in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They mainly reside in <\/span><b>Rajasthan, western Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and northern <\/span><b>Maharashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Some families<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have<\/span><b> migrated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to other states like <\/span><b>Tripura <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for jobs in tea gardens.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhil populations are <\/span><b>concentrated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the<\/span><b> southernmost hills of the Aravalli Range, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>western uplands of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>northernmost hills of the Western Ghats.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Bhil groups occupy the nearby river valleys and coastal plains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Occupation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Nearly all of the Bhil engage in <\/span><b>agriculture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some using the slash-and-burn (jhum) method but most employing the plow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They speak <\/span><b>Bhili<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an <\/span><b>Indo-Aryan language.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Bhili dialects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show varying degrees of influence of regional languages such as Rajasthani and Marathi, but they all appear to have their <\/span><b>origins in Gujarati.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Beliefs:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost all Bhils <\/span><b>practice ethnic religions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have been highly influenced by <\/span><b>Hinduism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of them <\/span><b>worship local deitie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s like Khandoba, Kanhoba, Bahiroba, and Sitalmata. Some worship the Tiger God called \u2018vaghdev\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Festivals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Baneshwar fair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the main festival celebrated among the Bhils.
