How do countries join the Eurozone?<\/b>\n

In order to join the euro area, EU member states are <\/span>required to fulfil <\/b>so-called <\/span>\u2018convergence criteria\u2019<\/b> which consists of <\/span>price stability, sound public finances,<\/b> the d<\/span>urability of convergence,<\/b> and <\/span>exchange rate stability.<\/b><\/li>\n
These binding economic and legal conditions were <\/span>agreed upon in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 <\/b>and are also known as<\/span> \u2018Maastricht criteria\u2019.<\/b><\/li>\n
All EU member states, except Denmark<\/b>, are <\/span>required to adopt the euro<\/b> and join the euro area once they are ready to fulfill them.<\/span><\/li>\n
The Treaty <\/span>does not specify<\/b> a <\/span>particular timetable for joining the euro area <\/b>but leaves it to member states to develop their own strategies for meeting the condition for euro adoption.<\/span><\/li>\n
The <\/span>European Commission and the ECB jointly decide<\/b> whether the<\/span> conditions are met <\/b>for euro area candidate countries to adopt the euro.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
