


{"id":18844,"date":"2024-01-02T10:25:59","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T04:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18844"},"modified":"2025-04-05T13:37:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T08:07:26","slug":"prohibition-of-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/prohibition-of-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was\u00a0signed on December 31, 1988, by the then Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi.<\/li>\n<li>The treaty\u00a0came into force on January 27, 1991, and has two copies each in Urdu and Hindi.<\/li>\n<li>Need for the Agreement:\n<ul>\n<li>In 1986, the\u00a0Indian army carried out a massive\u00a0exercise \u2018Brasstacks\u2019, raising fears of an attack on nuclear facilities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Since then, both countries have been\u00a0negotiating to reach an understanding towards the control of nuclear weapons, which culminated in the treaty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Provisions:\n<ul>\n<li>The agreement\u00a0mandates both countries to inform each other about\u00a0any\u00a0nuclear\u00a0installations and facilities\u00a0to be\u00a0covered under the agreement on the first of January of every calendar year, providing a confidence-building security measure environment.<\/li>\n<li>The term \u2018nuclear installation or facility\u2019\u00a0includes nuclear power and research reactors,\u00a0fuel fabrication, uranium enrichment, iso-topes separation, and\u00a0reprocessing facilities, as well as any other installations with fresh or irradiated nuclear fuel and materials in any form and establishments storing significant quantities of radioactive materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)?<\/h3>\n<p>The NPT is an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to foster the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of disarmament. The Treaty represents the only binding commitment in a multilateral treaty to the goal of disarmament by the nuclear-weapon States.A total of 191 States have joined the Treaty, including the five nuclear-weapon States.South Sudan, India, Pakistan, and Israel have never joined the NPT.
