


{"id":18933,"date":"2024-01-04T02:04:04","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T20:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18933"},"modified":"2025-04-05T14:11:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T08:41:26","slug":"skao","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/skao\/","title":{"rendered":"Square Kilometer Array Observatory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Square Kilometer Array Observatory<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a state of the art, mega science international facility to build the world\u2019s biggest and\u00a0most sensitive radio telescope for addressing a wide variety of cutting-edge science goals.<\/li>\n<li>The SKAO, collocated in\u00a0Australia\u00a0(SKA-Low) and\u00a0South Africa (SKA-Mid) with operational\u00a0headquarters in the UK, is expected to revolutionize radio astronomy, while driving the growth of many important new state-of-the-art technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Other ten countries involved are &#8211; Australia, Canada, China, India, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, and the Netherlands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>India and SKAO<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Subsequent to this approval, India will be signing the SKAO treaty to become a full-fledged member of the SKA Observatory and thus join the growing list of countries participating in the project.<\/li>\n<li>This approval covers funding support for the construction phase of the international SKA Observatory (SKAO) spread\u00a0over the next 7 years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project will be jointly funded by\u00a0the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and\u00a0Department of Science and Technology (DST),\u00a0with DAE as the lead agency.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Indian participation in SKA is a truly nationwide, inclusive project led by a consortium of more than 20 academic and research institutes (with NCRA-TIFR as the nodal institute).<\/li>\n<li>During the design\u00a0phase of the SKA (2014-2020), India has contributed actively to the project, with a lead role in the successful design of the complex Telescope Manager system.<\/li>\n<li>In the subsequent early prototyping phase, India was actively engaged in three areas of work namely\u00a0Telescope Manager package,\u00a0SKA-Low digital hardware package and\u00a0Science Data Processor work package.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in this project will open up possibilities for development of niche skills in Indian industry and research organizations in different areas of next generation technologies, such as modern antenna design, sophisticated cryogenic receiver systems, and high volume optical fibre data transport technology etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Radio telescope?<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0It is a astronomical instrument consisting of a radio receiver and an antenna system that is used to detect radio-frequency radiation between wavelengths of about 10 metres (30 megahertz [MHz]) and 1 mm (300 gigahertz [GHz]) emitted by extraterrestrial sources, such as stars, galaxies, and quasars.
