


{"id":18945,"date":"2024-01-04T04:52:36","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T23:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=18945"},"modified":"2026-01-03T11:53:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T06:23:58","slug":"savitribai-phule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/savitribai-phule\/","title":{"rendered":"Who was Savitribai Phule?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Savitribai Phule<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Born in a small village in Satara district of\u00a0Maharashtra on January 3, 1831, Savitribai Phule was an Indian\u00a0social reformer, poet, and powerful voice in the Indian freedom struggle.<\/li>\n<li>She was an\u00a0active participant in the\u00a0women&#8217;s liberation movement.<\/li>\n<li>Savitribai trained at Ms. Farar&#8217;s Institution in Ahmednagar and at Ms. Mitchell&#8217;s school in Pune to become the\u00a0first female teacher in India.<\/li>\n<li>Savitribai Phule\u00a0and her husband, Jyotirao Phule (one of the most famous social reformers in Maharashtra),\u00a0opened India&#8217;s first school for women in Pune in 1848.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Despite resistance from society,\u00a0by 1851, Phule was running 18 schools for children of\u00a0different castes, with a strength of 150 girls.<\/li>\n<li>They also established two educational trusts: the\u00a0Native Female School,\u00a0Pune, and the\u00a0Society for Promoting the Education of Mahars, Mangs,\u00a0and others from downtrodden castes.<\/li>\n<li>In 1852, the British government acknowledged the great work of the Phule family in the field of education and honored Savitribai\u00a0by naming her the best teacher.<\/li>\n<li>She, along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, actively\u00a0worked against the caste-based discrimination\u00a0prevalent in society.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>She played a crucial role in grooming Jyotirao Phule\u2019s pioneering institution,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/satyashodhak-samaj\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Satyashodhak Samaj<\/strong><\/a> (1873) that\u00a0fought\u00a0for equality of all classes.<\/li>\n<li>In 1852, she\u00a0initiated the Mahila Seva Mandal, a platform aimed at\u00a0creating awareness about women\u2019s rights.\u00a0Notably, this platform brought together members of all castes, challenging entrenched social hierarchies.<\/li>\n<li>Savitribai Phule was a\u00a0vocal advocate for the rights of widows.
