{"id":19025,"date":"2024-01-06T03:40:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T22:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19025"},"modified":"2025-04-05T14:47:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:17:17","slug":"thanjavur-doll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/thanjavur-doll\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanjavur doll"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Thanjavur doll<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The craft was brought to Thanjavur by\u00a0Maratha ruler Raja Serfoji in the early 19th Century.<\/li>\n<li>In Tamil language, it is called Thanjavur thalayatti bommai.<\/li>\n<li>Thanjavur dolls are primarily of two kinds, one is\u00a0the bobble-head version, and the other is the\u00a0tilting doll version.<\/li>\n<li>Material used:\n<ul>\n<li>Doll-makers use\u00a0papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9, plaster of Paris and other materials for the body.<\/li>\n<li>A mixture of\u00a0vandal mann (fine silt deposited by rushing streams of water), kali mann (clayey riverbed mud), and manal (loose aggregate) is required to make the dolls\u2019 pedestals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Copper sulphate powder is added as a fungicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Process:\n<ul>\n<li>All the dolls\u00a0have a lightweight body made of tapioca flour, papier-mache and plaster of Paris cooked and kneaded to the consistency of \u2018roti\u2019 dough.<\/li>\n<li>Each toy is made in halves, by pressing the rolled-out \u2018doll dough\u2019 into cement moulds, with liberal dusting of chalk powder.<\/li>\n<li>Dolls pass through at least seven stages from mould to assembly before they are packed for despatch, with each step, such as painting the facial features and costume embellishments, requiring a skilled artisan\u2019s attention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0dancing doll has four sections (including the arms that are individually glued to the torso), each balancing on the other with the help of inner metal loop hooks that create the light bobbing movement.<\/li>\n<li>It earned the Geographical Indication tag in 2009.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What Is Geographical Indication (GI) tag?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
